Starting with a small but ambitious group of recruits, the Speech team entered the West Chester Carolyn Keefe Memorial Tournament hosted in nearby West Chester, Pennsylvania. Charu Jangid (SEAS '14), Jon Fried (C '14) and Siteng Ma (W '14) all broke ranks and went on to compete in the finals. Jon placed in both Impromptu and Extemporaneous speaking, while Charu and Stan placed in Impromptu. It was an auspicious start.
Meanwhile, the debaters entered an extremely challenging tournament at Lafayette College-the Ocho. Eight consecutive rounds of Lincoln-Douglas debate with some tough competition proved Penn a winner. They placed second in sweepstakes against the national champions Western Kentucky. In addition Zaina Naeem, Tanay Mehta, and Noah Rosenthal all broke. Noah and Tanay both won bids to Nationals.
The debate team also traveled to St. Anselm's College in November. Noah Rosenthal (W '13) and Tanay Mehta (W/SEAS '14) received their second bids to nationals of the year, and Tanay Mehta was named top speaker. For their performance, Penn took home the third-place sweepstakes award.
The Speech Team attended the Suffolk University Swing tournament in Boston, Massachusetts in February 2011. We faced some tough competition, but all did well, especially Maya Shumyatcher (C '14), who placed in Poetry.
The Ocean City spring break tournament was a phenomenal success for Speech, with nearly all attending breaking and winning bids to Nationals. Jon Fried, Charu Jangid and Siteng Ma placed first in Extemporaneous speaking, Persuasion and Impromptu respectively. Jon, Charu and Stan also broke and placed in all the other events they were entered in.
In total, Penn Forensics earned 19 bids to NFA Nationals, the most in the past four years! We were unable to fly to Nationals this year, because the tournament timing was unfortunate, but we will be there next year. We are an intimate team of bright, ambitious members and we’re looking to expand. We’re a team with a big future. Therefore, we’re looking for extraordinary talent to join our ranks for next year. We are excited to jump start preparations for the 2011-2012 season and would love to hear from potential recruits.
